The Eastern Sierra and Mammoth Lakes region of California offers some of the most rewarding fall fishing in the state. As temperatures cool and summer crowds fade, the area transforms into a peaceful, golden landscape framed by aspens in full color and crisp mountain air. Lakes, rivers, and creeks, from the Owens River to the high alpine waters around Mammoth, become prime habitat for trout that are actively feeding before winter, making fall an excellent time for both fly and spin anglers. The lower light, cooler water, and seasonal insect activity create ideal conditions for productive days on the water, whether you’re casting in a quiet meadow stream or exploring a glassy alpine lake.
We have two main locations for the weekend, and you’ll find the addresses listed below. Be sure to enter them into your GPS while you still have cell service, as coverage can be spotty in this area.
- Crowley Lake Campground
- Mammoth Lakes, California
DIY Fishing
These events require advance preparation and proactive engagement. Please note that our DIY Fishing events are truly do-it-yourself. Each angler is responsible for their own planning and preparation before arrival. While iFishiBelong and our event co-hosts provide helpful resources, links, and key information, it is the registrant’s responsibility to carefully review all emails and thoroughly explore the event website.
The more prepared you are, the better your experience will be. Familiarizing yourself with the area, understanding the logistics, and reviewing all provided materials in advance will help ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and successful event.
Live Q&A Session
Our goal is to equip each participant with knowledge of the area, how to fish it, and suggested fishing locations. Shared through the event webpages and reinforced during the Live Q&A session.
Please mark your calendars for the Live Q&A Session on August 17th, 2026, at 7 pm PT. Register HERE.
Fishing License
In California, anyone 16 or older must have a valid fishing license issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and must follow all local regulations, including species-specific size and bag limits, as well as seasonal restrictions.

Friday Social Fishing Day
We are working on obtaining any permits needed for a social fishing day on the Upper Owens River. Join us on Friday, 10/9/26, for a fun and relaxed day on the water!
The day will kick off at 9:00 AM with a 1.5-hour, donation-based “Fly Fishing the Eastern Sierras” workshop led by Carl Crawford.
This is a casual, social DIY fishing day, not guided, so come ready to explore, connect, and enjoy the river at your own pace. Let’s share the riverbanks with both new and familiar faces. Say hello, swap tips, and lend a hand when someone’s got a fish on!

Hire a fishing Guide

Fly Shops
Support local businesses and shop small in the Eastern Sierra to help sustain the community, preserve the region’s unique character, and keep essential services and resources available for both residents and visitors.
Local Fisheries
Below are some of the notable fisheries in the Eastern Sierras.
River Safety and Wading Concerns
In the fall, rivers in the Eastern Sierra near Mammoth Lakes can run cold and unpredictable, so anglers should use caution when wading, wear proper gear, and be mindful of slippery rocks, changing flows, and fast-moving water.
Clothing
Weather in our area can be unpredictable, so plan for anything. Temperatures range from the 40s to the 80s, depending on the day. Be prepared with shedable layers to add or shed throughout the day.
- Waders are recommended for safety.
- Studded rubber boots are best as rocks can be very slippery and uneven.
- Everyone should have a pair of polarized sunglasses for eye protection and to see fish and your obstacles under water.
- It’s always recommended to bring a rain jacket.
Fishing Equipment
- Fly Rods – 4wt – 6wt.
- Rod Length – Average 9’
- Fly Lines – Typical Floating Fly Lines
- Leader – 9’ 3x – 5x
- Tippet Spools – 3x – 6x
Eastern Sierra Area Flies
In October, the Eastern Sierra rivers and lakes are best fished with late-season flies that match the hatch and the cooling conditions, think midges, blue-winged olives, and smaller terrestrials like ants and beetles, which trout actively feed on as water temperatures drop.
