Guided by experienced instructors, participants will build foundational skills such as casting, knot tying, entomology, and fish handling. Lunch will follow immediately after the station rotations.
In the afternoon, each participant will be paired one-on-one with a river mentor to put their new skills into practice while fishing. This personalized experience is designed to build confidence, deepen their connection to the environment, and spark a lasting love for the sport.

Be prepared for a fall day outdoors.
- Each participant should dress in comfortable layers suitable for a cool fall day and bring a rain jacket in case of wet weather.
- If the participant has sunglasses or other eye protection, please bring them along. When flies are in the air, eye protection is always a great idea for added safety!
- Sunscreen
- The Pariticipants Waders and Boots (if they have their own)
- Old Sneakers (as a backup if you’re borrowing waders and boots)
- If the participant is borrowing waders and boots, please bring an old pair of sneakers that can get wet or dirty. While we plan to provide gear for every participant, sneakers serve as a helpful backup option.
Your involvement is a key part of making this a meaningful and memorable day for the participant. Here’s how you can help throughout the event:
Be Hands-On in the Morning: Join the participant for all morning learning sessions. This is a great opportunity to engage directly in the activities alongside the instructors and other participants.
Help with Lunch: Assist with picking up and distributing lunch for the participant and your family/group.
Supervise Restroom Trips: Please accompany the participant to the restroom when needed. For safety reasons, youth should not walk around the event site alone. If you need to step away from the group, be sure to inform the participant’s learning station instructor or River Mentor.
Be a Cheerleader in the Afternoon: During the fishing session, take a step back and allow the participant to learn directly from their River Mentor. Unless asked to assist, your role is to encourage and support from the riverbank.
- Celebrate when they hook a fish.
- Encourage them if they lose one.
- Cheer them on and celebrate their catch.
Capture the Moments: While a photographer will be on-site, we encourage you to bring a fully charged phone or camera to capture the participant’s experience. The memories from this day will last a lifetime.
